Is a loud ringing before the paralysis normal?

Every single time it starts with what sounds like a train or a very loud electric hum. Is that a common part of it or should I get my ears checked?

Very common. The Knowledge Hub article on ringing explains it as the auditory cortex amplifying its own noise floor. Worth a read.

I use it as my starting signal now. As soon as I hear it, I begin the toe movement.
